Wolverines miss time goals at pair of meets

The two meets in which Wilber-Clatonia cross country competed last week saw the Wolverines finish further back than Coach Nick Behring wanted.

WCHS was at Branched Oak Lake Sept. 24 for the Bob Hoyer Invitational and finished about mid-pack. Evan Odvody was 22nd in 18:06.27 to lead the team.

“I thought we should have been higher,” Behring said. “We hadn’t seen Aurora. We wanted to be more competitive with them.”

Aurora finished fourth in the team standings.

He said Grant Eschiti and Ryan Nicholson were about 40 seconds off their times, though everyone ran OK.

The team was back in action Sept. 26 at Thayer Central and won the team title, edging Tri County by two points.

Behring had goals for the runners going into the meet.

“They didn’t hit any, but they ran well,” he said.

Odvody finished second with a time of 18:18.23. Eschiti was fourth and Nicholson 12th. Beau Odvody was back after missing time with an injury and finished 16th.

“It was a good meet for them. They deserve it,” Behring said.

He decided not to take the team to the UNK Invite Sept. 30.

“We’ll just hit practice hard this week,” he said.

The Wolverines will run at Syracuse Friday, Oct. 4. Races are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
