WC shuts down Jeffs for win

Oct. 4 turned into a good night for the Wilber-Clatonia football team.

The Wolverines scored 13 points in the first quarter and didn’t look back in a 33-7 home win over Fairbury.

The margin could have been more, Coach Lynn Jurgens said. WCHS had three touchdowns called back because of penalties.

“All in all, it was a good night,” he said.

Cooper Palmer was the first Wolverine to find the endzone, scoring on a four-yard run in the first quarter. Ty Roesler followed with a seven-yard run that put WC up 13-0.

Fairbury scored its only points of the game in the second quarter on a 15-yard pass and made point-after kick.

Wilber-Clatonia answered with a 78-yard run by Cash Keslar to take a 19-7 lead into halftime.

WCHS added a 20-yard run by Keslar in the third quarter and a 21-yard pass to Keslar from Crew Pulliam in the fourth.

Jurgens said it was nice to keep the Jeffs out of the endzone in the second half.

“We didn’t give up,” he said.

Keslar finished with 187 yards rushing on 15 carries, caught one pass and intercepted another. Palmer added 68 yards on 15 carries.

Aven Smith led the defense with five solo tackles and two assists. Aiden Zajicek added five solo tackles, including two sacks, and recovered two fumbles. Roesler and Caden Parham added four solo tackles each, with Roesler assisting on three more and Parham on one.

Roesler and Zach Marsh also recovered fumbles for WC.

Up next for the Wolverines (2-4) is a trip to Nebraska City (0-5) Friday, Oct. 11. Jurgens said the Pioneers are optioning down from Class B this season and have eight starters back from last year.

“I think it will be a good ball game,” he said. “We need to keep working on us and not beat ourselves. If we can clean some things up, we’d be alright.”
