Trojans need five to win two

Tri County volleyball played 13 sets in six days and won all three matches.

The Trojans opened the span with a 25-11, 25-19, 28-26 win over Sandy Creek Sept. 24.

“We did a good job serving aggressively,” Coach Megan Kopf said. “We were consistent with our hitting and defense.”

She said the Cougars did not receive serve well, and that allowed eight aces by TC servers.

Sayber Hoesche finished the night with 10 kills, and Olive Clark added nine.

Tri County was at Elmwood-Murdock Sept. 28 and needed five sets to win, topping the Knights 25-20, 25-10, 21-25, 19-25, 15-11.

It ended up being an extra-long night for both teams. EM wanted to play a best-of-five reserve match that ended up going five, Kopf said. Varsity didn’t start playing until after 8 p.m. and then needed five games, as well.

Kopf said the Trojans served aggressively and dominated the first two games.

“The third we went on a break,” she said, citing seven service errors.

In game four, Kopf switched her lineup to generate a little more offense after one of the TC outside hitters was struggling.

Game five saw TC trailing 11-8, and the Trojans fought back for the 15-11 win. Macey Gronemeyer went on a service run and kept them out of system, Kopf said. Tri County also put up three blocks on three consecutive plays that helped push the Trojans to the win.

“We were happy to come out and win,” she said.

Clark led the team with 15 kills in the match. Alaina Kopf picked up 30 digs, and Gronemeyer served four aces.

The Trojans finished September with a reverse sweep of Exeter-Milligan-Friend, winning 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-8. Hoesche pounded 15 kills and Clark added 13. Kenzi Scherling served six of the team’s 16 aces, and Alaina Kopf picked up 22 digs.

Up next for the Trojans (13-6) is a two-day tournament at Hastings St. Cecilia Oct. 1 and 3. TC is back at home Tuesday, Oct. 8, to host Wilber-Clatonia at 7 p.m.
