WC looks for first win of season

The start of the 2024 volleyball season has not gone as hoped for Wilber-Clatonia. The Wolverines played six matches in the first week and are still seeking their first win.

“We are young and inexperienced and the varsity tempo is much faster than we are used to,” Coach Jenna Schuerman said. “At practice it is hard to replicate the faster tempo as our numbers are small. There were moments when we showed the potential this team could have.”

She said Hadley Jurgens, Shali Mccright and Camille Nohavec picked up some great digs against tough hitters. Haleah Schuerman and Elaina Roger played well on the attack.

Sage Zoubek moved to middle hitter for the tournament at Centennial Aug. 31 and was able to put up some blocks and get some touches on the ball.

“Ultimately our ability to control the ball, allowing multi-point serving runs hurt us,” Coach Schuerman said.

The Wolverines opened the season in a quadrangular at Palmyra and lost to BDS 25-9, 25-11 and to Tri County 25-10, 25-22.

At Centennial, Wilber-Clatonia lost to Fairbury 25-13, 25-11, Bishop Neumann 25-16, 25-5, Clarkson-Leigh 25-5, 25-9 and Lutheran High Northeast 25-15, 25-13.

Haleah Schuerman finished the week with 21 kills, and Roger added 12. Jurgens picked up 17 digs at libero.

Up next for the Wolverines is a match at Sandy Creek Thursday, Sept. 5, and a tournament at Weeping Water Saturday, Sept. 7.

“One thing we will be working on is transitioning from serve receive to offense, and then to defense. We are just not as automatic in doing that as we need to be. This comes from experience, which we just don’t have yet,” Coach Schuerman said.
